Stephen R. Polauf
Attorney, Labor & Employment
My Background
I am a Connecticut-licensed attorney specializing in labor and employment law. My practice serves both employees and employers, providing advice, counsel, and litigation representation for individuals facing workplace issues as well as management addressing personnel matters. I handle cases in state courts and before administrative agencies. My goal is to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations while helping both workers protect their rights and employers maintain necessary operational flexibility.
My advice and counsel services include day-to-day consultation on employment law issues as they arise, offering practical advice on workplace policy implementation and management. I review, revise, or draft employment contracts, non-competes, handbooks, individual workplace policies, separation and release agreements, and mandatory legal notices. For employees, I provide guidance on workplace rights, harassment or discrimination claims, leave entitlements, and contract negotiation. For employers, I offer close direction on employee disciplines and terminations, with a long-term view towards preempting litigation while addressing immediate personnel challenges.
I have a particular interest in employee handbooks and deep experience drafting handbooks for employers of all sizes—from small family-owned businesses to regional and national corporations, including schools, hospitals, law firms, franchises, service-industry employers, and large manufacturers. When representing employees, this knowledge allows me to effectively identify policy violations and protect workers’ rights.
When litigation becomes necessary, I am experienced with all aspects of state litigation and have an established track record of success in motion practice from my time in private law firms. I move for final disposition of cases through well-crafted and strategic motions. I apply a similar approach to mediations and position statements where settlement is possible and desirable, often as the result of the position established through compelling written motions and comprehensive discovery.
My litigation experience includes both prosecuting and defending claims in employment and public accommodation suits, breach of contract matters, wage and hour disputes, and discrimination claims. I have successfully represented both employees and employers before the NLRB, EEOC, and CHRO in discrimination and labor charges both at the outset and following investigation and fact-finding.
I serve individuals of all backgrounds and employers of all sizes, and I offer highly competitive rates and fee arrangements by maintaining a lean practice without compromising on quality or services.
